CITY OF HIGHWOOD ANNOUNCES ADVISORY WATER CONSERVATION INITIATIVE

HIGHWOOD, IL (JULY 5, 2012) – Due to the prolonged heat and dry weather, the City of Highwood has instituted an advisory water conservation initiative to ensure that an adequate supply of water can be maintained and reduce the strain on the pumping system. As such, residents and businesses are being asked to refrain from outdoor water usage through this weekend. If outdoor water usage is absolutely necessary, then please utilize the odd/even approach. In other words, if your address ends in an odd number, then only water on odd numbered days, such as July 5. If your address is an even number, then please only water on even number days.

This water conservation initiative is only a precaution. While the City struggled to keep up with very high water demand over the past several days, at no point was the Highwood water system in jeopardy. Sufficient capacity in the water tower has been maintained to meet the community needs and provide for fire protection. During a review of the system, the City staff did find a water main break that was a contributing factor to the high water use. This has since been repaired and will alleviate a significant demand on the system. However, to be on the safe side, the City staff has requested that the water conservation initiative remain in place through the weekend until temperatures cool down.

This is a voluntary effort and the City of Highwood is asking for the cooperation of all residents and businesses, in order to help reduce the demand on the water system and avoid a potential a crisis. The City of Highwood appreciates your understanding and cooperation to help conserve water. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact City Hall at 847-432-1924.

The City of Highwood administrative offices are located at 17 Highwood Avenue, Highwood, Illinois 60040. Feel free to visit http://www.cityofhighwood.com, or call 847-432-1924.
