A Very Highland Park Thanksgiving

Already sick of turkey? Those local options offer the chance to enhance your holiday menu.

Once Upon A Bagel

This Highland Park mainstay is running a special on challah this holiday season. Until they close at 2 p.m. today, challah loaves will be offered at the special price of $2.99, a 25 percent savings.

Real Urban Barbecue

Sometimes cooking that turkey is the hardest part of Thanksgiving. It hogs the oven all day long from those all important side dishes and is frighteningly hot and heavy when it's finally time to come out. It would be easier to let someone else do the cooking, and that's where RUB comes in. The new BBQ eatery offers up a smoked 10-14 pound bird for $49.95, available to be picked up Thanksgiving morning.

Breadsmith

Everyone knows that a turkey is the classic table centerpiece for Thanksgiving. What few people know, however, is that it doesn't necessarily need to be made out of meat. Breadsmith offers a choice of three different kinds of bread shaped as a turkey - wheat, multi grain or french peasant bread - for $14.95.

Rosebud

One of the few restaurants in Highland Park open on Thanksgiving, Rosebud will be serving from it's regular menu as well as a special menu. Selections here are NOT prix fixe, but a la carte, and the special menu includes choices such as whitefish, scampi, prime rib and turkey breast. The most expensive entree tops out at $27.95, and hours are from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Baker Boys

When it comes to local bakeries, the Baker Boys are hard to beat. This year, the pair celebrate their first Thanksgiving with two special cupcakes. Until closing time on at 7 p.m. on Wednesday they'll be offering an Apple Pie Cupcake as well as a Pumpkin Pie Cupcake for just $2.95.

Sunset Foods

You forgot those crispy French onion things, didn't you? They were on the list, but, yep, you forgot them. Grandpa is going to sulk all night unless he gets his green bean casserole just the way he wants it, so you better run out to the store. Luckily, Sunset foods is open til 9 p.m. Wednesday night and until 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving day.
