Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

Are We 'On' or 'In' the North Shore?

One letter has sparked a heated debate between two Patch editors, and we need our readers to settle this once and for all.

Joanna Schneider, editor of Glenview Patch, recently noticed that Stan Golovchuk, editor of Northbrook Patch, was writing "in the North Shore" when referring to local news. She pointed this out to him and advised he use "on" instead.

She insists this the appropriate attribution, and a few of their colleagues seem to agree.

Golovchuk did not appreciate the advice, not one bit. A fight broke out — words were said, pans were thrown and still no clear winner emerged from the debate.

Both sides made some strong points.

"Towns such as Northbrook and Glenview, which consider themselves part of the North Shore, are not along the lake," Golovchuk said. "Therefore, they wouldn't be on the Shore, they're in it. It being a region. C'mon people."

Schneider took a polar opposite position.

"Blah blah blah, nag nag nag," she said. "On the North Shore, c'mon people."

It was eventually clear that the decision should be left to a vote — a vote by the people who live in the hotly contested area. So whether you're on, in, or from the North Shore, tell us what you think so we can finally settle this and get back to work.

The poll runs until 12 p.m. Friday, so if you're going to vote, campaign or make donations to either camp, do it quick.

Full disclosure: The winner of this debate will receive a tiara from the loser. Also, Joanna Schneider doesn't talk like that.

Jeffrey Baer did a "North Shore" special for Channel 11 and in it, Northbrook and Glenview are considered a "North Shore" town, so I say we are IN.

Northbrook and Glenview are IN the north shore.
Evanston to Lake Forest are ON the north shore.
I hope this has cleared things up.

Of course, Northbrook and Glenview are more properly referred to as NEAR the north shore.

This is hilarious! I do hope this is all in jest and "for fun." "On" or "In." Just adding my two cents here...technically speaking, if we were "in" the North Shore, we would all be "at" the North Shore, on the beach, "in" the water swimming. I consider all the northern suburbs that are near the lake "on" the North Shore. In the grand scheme of life, when asked, I simply reply that I live in Glenview. whether they consider me "close to" "in" "near" "next to" "on" or "not part of the North Shore" is their opinion. I hope everyone who is reading this has a wonderful day! Sending Peace and All Good Things - Sincerely, Dr. Jennifer La Civita

I hate to throw a colleague under the bus but I agree with your analysis, Dr. La Civita! Saying "in the North Shore" seems to imply we are either planted in the sand or bobbing in the water ... It also helps to put the phrase in context: "These suburbs are located ON the North Shore of Lake Michigan."

My big question, however, is do we capitalize or lowercase "North Shore." Is this an official geographic region?

Well since the residents of North Suburban Glenview and Northbrook now consider themselves in the NS.
I was wondering just when Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, and Glencoe fell into the Lake?
This is a fabric of real estate sales bunk.
You live in VERY nice towns with great services
You do not live on or in the NS
You live West of the shore.
And by the way we live on the WEST SHORE OF LAKE MICHIGAN !

Golovchuk is a talented professional. He should realize that editors are always right, no matter how wrong they are.

The towns that border the lake are on the North Shore. If you live in one of them, you live ON the North Shore.

I'd like to think we have more important things to discuss up here, wherever that may be.

@EllenBethGill, We can be serious with the best of 'em but you gotta make time for a little fun, too! Especially on a somewhat gray Wednesday, right?

Northbrook and Glenview are North Shore (in every sense of that phrase) wannabes. Hoi Polloi.

On the North Shore. In the region known as the North Shore, which includes specific reference to the region. Or in the North Shore city of .... (And there are purists who would say Northbrook and Glenview are northern suburbs but not part of the North Shore proper.)

You are one of my favorites, but all I have to say, is I grew up ON the North Shore! I'm on team Joanna for this one....

I voted for "on the North Shore". I've lived here all my life, and I don't remember (back then) Northbrook, Glenview or Deerfield being part of the North Shore. Somehow they glommed onto being in the North Shore area. I think they just wanted to look more ritzy, but I think they are ritzy enough. They can stop saying it.

Anyway, we always said "on" because you are on a shore, not in it.

Photos? We're doing a video! Stan, I'd like a jewel-encrusted tiara and I prefer purple gems, FYI.

What if they don't have purple gems? What if they only have yellow gems? Also, any preference on the a gold vs. silver tiara?

Let's have a party and discuss all the Great Architectual Gems in GV NB. DF NF
Perhaps we can meet on the Beach of one of above towns.
Of course DF has a NS
On Lake Elenor
The closest these towns will ever get to the shore is when they turn on their faucet.
See you at YOUR Beach.

@Stan, I look best in gold but silver will do just fine. Yellow gems would be acceptable, though my first choice is always purple. Happy tiara shopping!

Have to say, reading all these comments has been amusing and fun - nice to know that plenty of people "on" the North Shore have a sense of humor. Quite frankly, Glenview (where I live) is really nowhere near the north shore/North Shore so I never say "on" or "in" at all. I say that I live "in" The Glen, so that way, I avoid the situation all together. Of course, technically, I guess I could say that I live and work "on" the Glen because... ok, ok, time to go to work! I wish all of you a wonderful day! Whether we live "in" or "on," "near" or "at" it has been fun. Sending you all peace and good things!
Happy Day-

I thought bring on"the shore" means a location near to a body of water. Maybe some people think that it is irrelevant how many miles the location is from the body of water.
Depending on your definition, the location of the former Cabrini-Green housing projects could be considered the Gold Coast. (Sure, would Anyone else like top stretch the facts?)
