Bestselling Author on Parenting Heads to Highland Park
Author Pamela Druckerman created quite a stir last year with her internationally bestselling memoir, Bringing Up Bébé. She will speak at the Highland Park Public Library on Feb. 15.
Back in May 2012, Time Magazine ran a provocative cover story titled, “Are You Mom Enough?”
The article featured Dr. Sears’ Attachment Parenting, or as we pointed out, parenting to extremes.
Betsy and Sal readers may recall that my sister and I got into some deep water when we penned our objections to this overbearing form of child rearing.
Attachment Parenters came out in full force to let us know we must have ruined our children’s lives by allowing them to sit in strollers, sleep in their own beds and once in a while, (I can’t believe I am admitting to this…) drink formula from bottles. It is truly amazing that any of our kids are able to function as teens and young adults. Yet against all odds, they are.
Turns out, Sal and I are not alone in our beliefs that children are part of the family, not the main attraction. In fact, unbeknownst to us, our viewpoints were quite avant-garde.
Author Pamela Druckerman created quite a stir last year with her internationally bestselling memoir, Bringing Up Bébé, which investigated the advantages of French parenting. And she has done it again. Pamela’s new book, Bébé Day by Day offers 100 clear, concise rules along with brief discussions on how to parent in the French way. And let me just say, the French say a big “non” when it comes to babies taking over their lives!
Just like French cuisine, some of the rules you will like, and some will be tough to swallow. For example, Rule # 8 - Epidurals Aren’t Evil. That’s your basic croissant. Everyone should love that rule, hey, nothing painful about a buttery bread. Rule #82 – Your Bedroom is Your Castle, yes, guard it carefully. This one is like a fine French wine. Choose when to enforce this one and savor your time with it. Rule #77 – Lose The Baby Weight. Rip out this page. It’s page 91. I’ll call this the escargot. The escargone. Whatever. Which brings me to my favorite, Rule #42 – Eat Chocolate.
Redemption day has come. Well, it is about to come – to Highland Park.
