Highland Park Resident Sues Winnetka Realtor Over $162K in Stolen Jewelry

Lena Katamanin claims the firm is responsible for the theft of more than $162,000 worth of jewelry from her home during an open house in April.

Highland Park resident Lena Katamanin is suing a Winnetka based real estate firm, claiming the firm is responsible for the theft of more than $162,000 worth of jewelry from her home during an open house in April, according to Winnetka Talk.

Katamanin filed the suit Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court against Midwest Realty Ventures, LLC, Winnetka Talk reports. In the suit, Katamanin claims the brokerage had "sole control" over her Sheridan Road home during an open house on April 22 that ended with more than $162,000 of her jewelry missing.

Highland Park Police were notified about the stolen jewelry in April, according to a May 1 police blotter.

"It was reported that jewelry was stolen on Sunday, April 22,  between 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. from a locked closet, during a private open house in the 900 block of Sheridan Road, Highland Park," the blotter reads.

Bleh, only in HP would someone be so stupid to entrust their home and jewelry to strangers walking in and browsing around. Next time don't leave your home during the open house and don't expect your real estate agent to babysit your stuff. Or better yet, don't host an open house. This must have been an inside job as someone had to know where she kept her stash.

Switzerland is a great place to fake a death and live rich and tax-free.... it would not be the first time a HP native faked his death.... http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/iteam&id=8266512

on the one hand, it is not a crime to have wealth as one poster seemed to think. On the other hand, there are safe deposit boxes for a reason...who would leave valuables around anyway?

Why did she wait 7 months to sue? It happened in April.

Likely the negotiations with the insurance companies came to an impasse.... It's all a scam / "Russian mafia scum" as Daniel pointed out above.
