Many states have passed legislation that limits the ability of citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
The League of Women Voters of Lake County and the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois are sponsoring a panel discussion which will address this controversial issue at 7 p.m. Thursday (June 21) at the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center, 2007 Civic Center Way.
The program is titled, "Voting and Speaking Out: Defending the Targets of Intolerance from Voter Suppression and Attacks on Free Speech".
The panel features Adam Schwartz, senior staff counsel for the ACLU of Illinois, and Rosemary Heilemann, director, League of Women Voters for Lake County. After a short presentation concerning various state voter identification laws, legal challenges, and impediments to voter registration drives, the audience will be able to ask questions.
