Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was seen on video this week telling donors that nearly half the country will never "take personal responsibility for their lives."

The video, posted by Mother Jones magazine, was secretly taken during a $50,000 a plate fundraiser in Florida by an anonymous source. Romney has since said that he his comments were not "elegantly stated," but he did not apologize for the remarks, Politico reported.

In the video, Romney is discussing the fact that 47 percent of adult Americans do not pay federal income tax. Romney says that these people are "dependent upon government," "believe that they are victims," and would never vote for him, Mother Jones reported.

"[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives," Romney said on the video which is attached to this post.

Several news media outlets have pointed out that Romney's statements were misleading. For example, two-thirds of the 47 percent do pay federal payroll taxes for programs such as Social Security and Medicare, CBS reported.

Most of the rest of the 47 percent are elderly people who are retired, receiving Social Security and paid taxes throughout their lives. The Hamilton Project, which is part of The Brookings Institution, found that 96 percent of middle-aged workers with jobs pay federal income taxes or payroll taxes.
