Poll: Should Sales Tax Fund Deerbrook

People are voicing their opinions so let your voice be heard.

(Update: June 22 at 10 a.m.) Due to the popularity of this poll, Patch has extended the voting deadline until midnight Sunday. Results will be published first thing Tuesday morning. Check out what your neighbors have to say in the comments.

(Earlier: June 20 at 10:18 a.m.) Sales tax generated from shoppers at a proposed newly renovated Deerbrook Mall will reimburse mall owner Gateway Fairview for $16 million of the $26 million it plans to spend on the project.

Since Patch reported on the Village Board meeting Monday where the idea was presented and published a story explaining how some of the cost will be borne by Deerbrook shoppers, Patch readers have been expressing strong opinions.

Now Patch is taking an unofficial survey to gauge reader opinion. Cast your vote, leave more comments and we will publish the results over the weekend. You can vote until 5 p.m. Friday.

  • Should 2/3 of the money for the Renovation of Deerbrook Mall come from tax dollars?

I agree, only a Dumbocrat minion of Quinn could believe that raising taxes will somehow increase revenue...

Since when should Taxpayers fund a FOR PROFIT private property? Sounds like Deerfield is trying to emulate the Chicago Cubs in their attempt to get the Taxpayers to rebuild Wrigley Field. I wonder if the ownership of the Cubs is also involved with the Deerbrook Mall?

I'm a Democrat (100% in recent years) not a Dumbocrat or any of the other degrading terms the right wing uses, and I think this approach to Deerbrook is a terrible idea! I have a thick skin and can dish it too, but the bully BS by some on this board is annoying. I'm going to try to hold my tongue and not call the right wing stupid, faux news followers, blind followers of bigoted old farts in Congress because I know the Democrats will win back America for the people. We'll balance the budget like we did before, end the wars, end the Bush tax cuts for the rich, and not cut Federal spending overnight by 18% putting this country in depression like Romney would do, we wont be another Ireland like Romney would have us by lowering corporate taxes to the point of no return. Nope, I won't even go there.

Thats funny RB.........lol. The Village leaders are what they are and when they act like it, I call them on it. You Dems have run IL into the ground and now the nation is headed the same direction. They are using those same nonsensical economic policies of Tax and Spend now in Deerfield. Is the Mayor not a Dem?

I won't be as nice as RB...."the Q" and "Mr Greenberg" you two need a bit of an Illinois History Lesson, the 10th has been governed by the Party of the Elephant, and while the state has typically gone Democrat in the General Election, the Govenorship since 1972 prior to Blago was the party of the Elephant, and the let's not forget that Govenor Jim Ryan has been in Jail for the same "Pay to Play" antics of Blago....in fact if you don't like the current President, the Illinois Party of the Elephant is solely responsible for President Obama's elevation to the Office of President, is the President of the Illinois party of the Elephant Ms. Judy Barr Topinka! So I believe it is safe to say that no matter what party you affliate with there is corruption in both....this "deal" reeks of cow excrement, period.

Actually if I recall - there were three counties in IL that were responsible for voting Democrat and they were responsible for electing Obummer to office. The rest of the counties in IL voted republican - but unfortunately didn't vote enough to keep 'bummer out.

For the past 40 years or so, we've been essentially stuck with democrat control of Springfield courtesy of Mr. Madigan.

Democrats have raised taxes, tolls, fees, and blocked concealed carry. This has had the net effect of forcing businesses and individuals from the State, and emboldening criminals. It's long past time for change.

I guess the truth really comes out... The mayor of Deerfield and the Board are dumber than a box of rocks. Why don't you increase tax incentives for every business that needs help? The bottom line is this: the mall owners are only in interested in deepening their pockets. If the mall thinks this is a good idea, why don't they make all Deerfield residents partners; we can call it Deerfield Mall Partnership, LLC. This way, everyone would be investing in their village. If the mayor and Board approves of the current plan, they should be removed from office and legal action should be taken against them. They work for the Village of Deerfield, not themselves. Enough is enough, we need to stop all of this bureaucracy crap.

RE: Working for themselves

Isn't that right? This deal is soooooooooooo bad, I don't understand how anybody could strongly support it. Maybe you can support it with some reservations and questions, but some of the board members and "staff" are ready to simply plow ahead.

Makes me wonder if somebody is deepening their pockets besides the developer.

Sales tax increase? Do you want even less people shopping in Deerfield? Let the developers find their own financing. Interest rates are low. This is one of the dumbest ideas in Deerfield yet, and there have been some doozies. I promise to vote against any trustee in favor of this. A bad idea no matter what party affiliation.

This deal is a DOG in so many ways that I discussed in another thread. And I'm one who would potentially like to see the town invest if it's done correctly.

However, I heard about all I need to hear from one of the developer's representatives at the Monday meeting when he said about the tax, "Will people change their spending behavior for the sake of a penny? We've found ... the answer is 'no' unless there are really large purchases which we don't have these types of stores here."

So you're telling me that you don't plan on putting those types of stores there either.

That is a representative of a company who is not listening to the community at all.

It is exceedingly childish to parrot the rantings of Roger Ailes, perhaps you need to go to a library and educate yourself. Name calling is not a sign of intelligence

No doubt the proposal makes no sense - the partisan political rantings above are ridiculous, though.

This does speak to the need for a new generation to step up and actually participate in our locally elected offices - from village trustees to the school board, it's time for the next generation of Deerfield leaders to emerge - the lack of involvement from our younger residents needs to shift - we need people involved who have a long term stake in our future.

Couldn't agree more: But simply posting on this thread isn't good enough: Flood the Mayor and the trustee's with e-mails expressing your thoughts on just how bad this proposal is. If you can't go to the village meeting to voice your dislike of the proposal (because I can't imagine a sane voter liking this proposal) then the politicians will keep on going after the graft, which I am sure there must be for them to seriously consider this downright STUPID proposal! NOBODY ELECTED Harriet Rosenthal to sell-out Deerfield, she needs to seriously rethink this proposal and send it into the "round-file" marked "T" for TRASH....the developers of Deerbrook Mall need to find private investors NO WELFARE for DEERBROOK MALL!

Anyone in city government who went on record stating that this is a good idea should be voted out - any confidence in the city leadership was ruined reading the details of this proposal. If the owner cannot manage the property, they should sell it to someone who can.
