Vernon Democrats Endorse Schneider
Candidates tell Vernon Township group how they will attract independent voters.
Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider won the endorsement of the Vernon Township Democratic Organization Sunday in Vernon Hills among the four contenders for their party’s nomination in the March 20 primary.
Schneider, Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman, Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda and Long Grove business owner John Tree made their case to more than 80 people why they were best suited to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the Nov. 6 general election.
After listening to each candidate make an opening statement and answer six questions submitted anonymously from the audience on index cards, 33 organization members voted their preference for Schneider, 27 for Sheyman and one each for Bavda and Tree, according to one of the ballot counters.
The group also endorsed West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison over Lake Bluff business consultant Milton Sumption in the campaign to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest).
Having the same or similar views on a number of issues like a woman’s right to choose, Social Security, Medicare and campaign financing, one question that let the candidates set themselves apart was electability.
Sheyman told the group his consistency would attract voters from across the spectrum. He told the story he met of a person in Vermont who supported “avowed socialist” Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) and former President George W. Bush.
“He said ‘I know exactly where they stand,’” Sheyman said. “People will know exactly where I stand. They’ll know what I’m going to do.”
When it was Schneider’s turn he explained the newly configured map of the district passed by the Illinois General Assembly in May was 34 percent Democrat, 26 percent Republican and 40 percent independent.
“(President) Barack Obama won this district 61-45. We need to keep these people home,” Schneider said. He thinks his life experiences will help do that. He believes people affected by the issues of the day can identify with his story.
“We’ve brought two kids through the schools here. When I graduated college I couldn’t find a job and had to work on a Kibbutz in Israel for a year,” Schneider said. “The Sears Catalogue was closed six months before our oldest son was born,” he added referring to a job he lost at because the company closed his division at a critical time in his life.
Tree said his experience in both the military—he is a colonel in the Air Force reserve—and business world will have broad appeal. “Democrats and even some Republicans will like my life story,” he said.
When it comes to attracting independents necessary to put either a Democrat or Republican over the top, Bavda thinks his ideas will win the day. “I have a vision,” he said stressing his focus on jobs and education. “I will create a vision that will affect people’s lives every day.”
One question recognized Dold’s recent decision to break with the Republican majority over a transportation bill. The inquisitor wanted to know how the four Democrats will deal with Dold’s own efforts at independence.
Tree dismissed Dold’s recent position citing the number of times he has voted with the Republican majority. “Now we can make him own his votes,” he said.
Sheyman and Schneider gave Dold credit for opposing the legislation because it lacked sufficient mass transit components. Sheyman indicated he would do the same thing if it was the best thing for the people of the area.

Can we give the “Electability” issue a break?
Fact is, while Ilya Sheyman was being a foot soldier for Obama's progressive agenda (healthcare reform, the Public Option, an end to the war in Iraq, a fair tax code), Brad Schneider was contributing to the campaign war chest of a certain Mark Kirk, who voted against every measure outlined above.
Fact is Brad didn’t merely contribute to Kirk’s campaign once (as he would have you believe), but in election after election from 2002 thru 2010.
Fact is Brad also gave contributions to a slew of right-wing, anti-choice, pro-gun Republicans, such as Bob Bennett, of Utah (outspoken supporter of flat taxation, staunch opponent of choice, voted against minimum wage) and Mike Johanns, of Nebraska, (adamant Right-to-Lifer whose contributors include the Koch bros + the NRA…)

Any age/life-experience “advantage” Brad has in the general election ends the minute Brad Schneider gets on the Debate stage with Bob Dold.
Picture this:
Moderator: Congressman Dold, what is your stance on Global Warming?
Dold: I’d love to answer that question, Ms Moderator, but first can I congratulate my esteemed challenger for having contributed 3 times more money to Mark Kirk over the years than I have.
Moderator: Congressman Dold, what is your stance on Medicare and Social Security?
Dold: I’d love to answer that question, Ms Moderator, but first can I congratulate my esteemed challenger for having contributed just shy of $6000 to GOP candidates, which makes my little $1000 contribution (to Mark Kirk in 2010—same year I was running for his old office—hee, hee) pale by comparison.

Aside from the fact that Brad has clearly shown that his one-time support for Kirk is greatly shadowed by his donations to progressive democrats, I don't see how in a general election this could ever be used against him. If Dold's main argument against Brad is "One time he gave to a Republican which was so terrible that you should vote for me because I am also a Republican" then I have a feeling Brad will be our next congressman.

daniel0987,
Point is all voters need a reason to go to the polls. (Even Democrats!)
If people do not feel there is a clear difference between two candidates, they stay home or they skip a line item on the ballot or they vote for the one with the most experience, which in this case would be Dold, who now has the most experience in government, having served in Congress for two years.
You can be pretty sure that Dold will use Schneider’s past contributions to Republicans (plus fact that Schneider pulled a GOP ballot in the 2000 and 2002 primaries) to drive a wedge between Schneider and the Democratic base and to establish himself (to Independent voters) as not all that different from the Democrat on the ballot.
Also, please note the “S” in the 2 words: contributions & Republicans. Schneider’s support for Kirk was not a one-time event. Schneider gave Kirk $$$ in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. It’s all at the FEC website. And Schneider gave $$$ to other Republicans too. Again, it’s all at the FEC website, which I encourage you to visit as you sort fact from fiction.
The FEC website is incredibly easy to use:

Some may be bullied by flower child's aggressive rhetoric, personal smears, and political mud-slinging, into believing pants on fire lies.
The fact is that Brad Schneider is the only candidate with the personal and professional experience, leadership, local and national support, and ideas to take back the 10th this November.
The fact is that Brad Schneider strongly supports a women's right to choose, creating a fairer tax code, protecting social security, and ensuring a secure future for our children. Check out his issues page http://schneiderforcongress.com/issues . The fact is Schneider has given more than 90% of his political donations to Democrats like Melissa Bean, Jan Schakowsky, Hillary Clinton, and Dick Durbin.
The fact is that Brad Schneider has been a community leader for over 20 years, and has received the support of local and national leaders like Rep. Julie Hamos, Rep. Susan Garrett, Sen. Jeff Schoenberg, and minority Whip Steny Hoyer.
The fact is that Brad Schneider understands that fixing problems in America require Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and everything in between. It is more important now than ever before to elect candidates who are willing to reach across the aisle to solve our nation's problems.
Facts are funny things, and flower child does a good job of turning opinions and personal smears into what look like facts.
However, the fact is that Brad Schneider is the only candidate who is right for the 10th District.

Ok, SH.
You want facts?
Fact:
Dold called himself Pro-Choice in 2010 (Anyone can say anything in their campaign lit.)
Fact:
Schneider is on record as having said that he would never support an anti-choice candidate.
Fact:
In 2000, as Governor of Nebraska, Mike Johanns signed a measure that made Nebraska one of 27 states to criminalize killing a fetus.
Fact:
Schneider gave money to GOP Senate candidate Mike Johanns in 2008.
Fact:
By 2009, GOP Incumbent Bob Bennett voted against women’s reproductive rights at least 8 times, including his vote of YES on barring HHS grants to organizations that perform abortions. (Oct 2007)
Fact:
Schneider gave money to Sen. Bob Bennett in 2009.
Fact:
Dan Seals lost 3 general elections.
Opinion:
Why did Dan Seals lose?
Voters did not see enough difference between the Republican and the Democrat.
We can’t let that happen again!

you can certainly say you don't agree with my positions, SH, but to call me aggressive or a liar? to say that i am a bully or that i am "smearing" your candidate?
you have expressed your OPINION! you have even pointed out a truth: that BS gave more money to Dems than he did to Reps.
i have not denied that fact in any of my posts.
you, however, seem unwilling to see the drawbacks of a candidate who gave thousands of dollors to GOP candidates, some of whom were quite forthright in their opposition to Choice among other tenets of the Progressive movement.
we evidently disagree.
but please take note, i am not calling you any names here. and i would appreciate it if you could do the same.

Schneider - "When I graduated college I couldn’t find a job and had to work on a Kibbutz in Israel for a year,”
A Kibbutz is an Israeli commune, as in "from each according to their ability, and to each according to his needs"... for real. How does his life experience of being a Commune-ist work to his advantage as a representative for our district? Does he tell stories of the authoritarian nature of such a government? Will he help protect our citizens from such a fate?
I have talked to people who lived in Israel's Kibbutz's, and, if you can crack the pro-Israeli code of silence, you will hear some pretty horrific tales of what goes on there.
Yo Brad! Cough up the truth buddy.

While Schneider may have at one point given to a Republican, it was not by any means on the issue of woman's rights and his beliefs are clear if you look at his record of donating to progressive Democrats and if you look at his issues page on the right to choose. It is both incorrect and spam to swarm an article with five comments that say the exact same thing. If you want to attack Brad, at least attack his positions, not what you would like his positions to be. The fact is, Brad is the best qualified leader to take on Dold.

CORRECTION!
“if you look at his issues page on the right to choose”
OK. This part of your statement does not need correcting. But ANYONE can say they are “pro-choice”! Dold certainly did in 2010.
I know that you begrudge ”Fred” for having “swarmed” the comment board “with five comments that say the exact same thing.” But I urge you to go to the FEC website, find out for yourself that Brad has given money to these above-mentioned campaigns and then Google each of their names + “Choice” to see what we mean.

Brad Schneider has given to far more pro-choice Democrats than Republicans, that is a fact. daniel0987 is correct, fred and flower child seem to desperately want Brad Schneider to be a pro-life conservative, when he simply is not. He has proven it time and time again in speeches, voter meetings, and events across the district. It is really time to stop propagating pants on fire lies. Yes, Schneider has donated to Republicans, but that does not mean he adheres with or agrees to every single position those individuals may take. He has proven himself to be a democratic leader who would serve our district well in Congress.

Well, Sheyman has absolutely no FEC history (or any record to analyze at all for that matter). I understand that he is 25 years old, so he just simply doesn't have a record to analyze, and I don't hold it against him. However, I have heard Brad Schneider answer the same question, and logically explain that his donations were based on a strong-support for Israel. I take him at his word, and also know that he has given far more money to Pro-Choice Democrats (and Republicans) and is Pro-Choice in his own beliefs. His website clearly explains his position: http://schneiderforcongress.com/issues/protecting-women’s-rights. Trying to twist his position and make it seem as though he is Pro-Life is wrong. Brad Schneider is a strong Pro-Choice Democrat, end of story.

No matter how he tries to spin it, he gave money to Senators that tried to de-fund planned parenthood. The FEC record stands for itself.

look at Sheyman's resume. it is a pretty clear indication of where he stands on the issues and a good indicator of how he will vote on the floor of the House.
Schneider, on the other hand, we can’t be too sure of.
Schneider says he is a Democrat. ok, i’ll buy that, even tho according to a Daily Herald article, Schneider pulled a GOP ballot in the 2000 and 2002 primaries. http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20120206/news/702069942/
Schneider says he is a progressive. his political contributions tell a different story. (will the real Brad Schneider please stand up?) why doesn’t Schneider claim to be a “moderate”? that’s the real question. no shame in being a moderate. might it have something to do with the political climate in our (newly redrawn) district? sorry, but Schneider’s claim to be a “progressive” (i counted! Schneider campaign used the term 8 times in 9 mailings sent to my house in the past 2 weeks) reeks of putting a wet finger in the air to see which way the wind’s blowing.
this election is too damned important to take chances on what someone “says” he is. i'm going with deed and action. i read Sheyman's resume; my vote goes to him.

It's hard to say who's the sorrier of the subject matter here, the sad array of candidates to run against some other dolt, or their campaign zealot's driveling comments here. The candidates are ducking the voters just as the incumbent is ducking voters. I'd rather know where I can go and meet a candidate, couldn't care less about their political donations. Everyone has pragmatic reasons for doing what they do, so the idea of a 70 year old voting for a 20-something is only going to be altered (in many cases) by a strong handshake, a look in the eye, and an articulate conversation. The outcome of this election will likely not benefit the constituents of our district, we'll have a dolt.
