Most towns would not want to try to promote their city with this slogan: "Our City Really Stinks."  But in Highwood, you can always expect the unexpected.

That slogan was a fitting one for the towns latest festivals, the first annual Garlic Fest.  The event was held in conjuction with Highwood's Evening Gourmet Farmers Market and featured just about any garlic concoction you could imagine, from traditional pastas to ice cream and cocktails.

Based on the positive turnout, city officials hope this will be a tradition that continues in the future.

"It's a little different but it's fun," Highwood Chairman of Special Events Eric Falberg said of both the Garlic Fest and the Bloody Mary Fest held earlier this summer. "How can you go wrong with garlic?  Later, everyone might be complaining, but right now everything is good."

A variety of local vendors vied for the title of Tastiest Garlic Creation in a people's choice competition for both savory and sweet concoctions.  To see who took home first prize in both categories, click on the video link above.

Highwood also crowned its first "Garlic Queen," as nine contestants were given one minute to tell the audience why they deserved that distinction.

The Garlic Queen was crowned based upon audience applause.  Check out the video to see who took home the Royal Garlic Queen tiara.

The edibles shown in the video offered a variety of how garlic can be used. And based on the crowds that evening, the event could be considered a success. But I wondered if some of the booths at the Fest and Gourmet Farmer's Market are appropriate. I spotted at least one jewelery seller and a booth from Costco selling memberships. I think farmers and food vendors from out of the area are appropriate, but the Mettawa Costco is a bit of a stretch. The organizers might reconsider who should participate in future events. Hats off to Highwood for continuing to make the town a vibrant one by hosting unique events like this one.

Certainly it has drifted from the traditional Farmers Market adding artifact, junk dealers et al. The Vegies et all, seem to be a side dish at this Farmers Market. However, there are some enjoyable mainstay businesses like Bent Fork et al. Seems to create more energy than a traditional Farmers Market with their evening hours, music and beverage vendors. Looks like they are throwing lots of things at it to see what sticks while combining a somewhat farmers market with a inexpensive date night. While one visit is more than enough for me this year, it is busy and I applaud them for stepping out of the box creating activity and buzz! Hey, doesn't America drive across the parking lot to Shop at Costco after they fill the tank?
