Deerfield High School students lined up Monday to get their chance to drive drunk. But don’t worry, there wasn’t any actual alcohol involved.

Illinois State Police set up two driving simulators in the hallway. One tested students' ability to drive while texting. The other demonstrated the difficulties of driving while under the influence.

“I literally couldn’t see anything,” sophomore Sarah Ginn commented after strapping on the drunk goggles.  “My vision was blurred and it made me feel really dizzy.”

According to State Trooper Maria Navarro, cell phones are also a huge danger for everyone, including teenagers, when behind the wheel. “For the last two years we’ve seen an increase,” Navarro said when it comes to accidents caused by drivers using their cell phones.

That’s why the simulators are transported to high schools across the state encouraging teens to follow the rules of the road.

The visit comes in the midst of Deerfield's "Don't Text & Drive" campaign. Earlier this month, the village teamed up with the Deerfield Police Department, DBR Chamber of Commerce, West Deerfield Township, Deerfield Rotary and Allstate Insurance to kick off the event.
