Junot Diaz, the Pulitzer Prize winning author for the novel "The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," will give a public reading on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Cressey Center for the Arts at Lake Forest Academy. Immediately following the reading, Díaz will conduct a question and answer session as well as a book signing. "Adolescents always like novels that refuse to patronize adolescents," said Jon Freeman, the former Chair of the English Department, English Instructor and Assistant Dean of Students at Lake Forest Academy. He was describing the appeal of Diaz's novel, "Oscar Wao," which focuses on an overweight, nerdy boy struggling to find his place. "Is Oscar Wao an American archetype?" Freeman said. Highland Park remembers the Tom Cruise classic "Risky Business," which was filmed nearly 30 years ago in and around the community.
A host of movies have been filmed in Highland Park, most notably John Hughes' "Home Alone," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Sixteen Candles," but the Tom Cruise classic "Risky Business" is perhaps the most memorable for the community. The iconic teen film, written and directed by Highland Park High School alumni Paul Brickman, celebrates its 30th anniversary in August. In a nostalgic story published in the Chicago Tribune, Highland Park residents remember what it was like to see their favorite locations like the now-closed Shelton's Ravinia Grill and Highland Park Theatre on the big screen. Jeff Cohen spent more than 30 years traveling the country to take photos of celebrities and models for Hugh Hefner. Now, the North Shore native is taking intimate, black and white portraits in Highland Park.
In 1967, Jeff Cohen went on his first photo shoot for his new boss: Hugh Hefner. "I was 22 and I had a job at Playboy," the 68-year-old said. "I became an instant celebrity." In 1974, he photographed Clint Eastwood at his studio in California, after the two ate sandwiches together, drank a few beers and compared shoes. "There was a knock on the door, and there was Clint," he said. "We both had bought the same pair of sneakers." Soon after, Cohen did a shoot with Cindy Crawford, who showed up to his place without the now-typical celebrity entourage of publicists and assistants. "She came by herself. They never do that anymore." Last Saturday, Cohen took photos of a father, his four children and their black Labrador. The dog sat on a black…

While I was growing up in Ravinia there was a store front photographer that was on the corner of Roger Williams and Pleasant Avenue where Soshee Boutique is presently. It's great to see Jeff Cohen on Roger Williams and I wish him much success. One day I went by his store front and he came out to greet me. The photos that are displayed in his store front window really catch your eye and it's nice …   more ›
