Old Running Shoes Get New Home

Running Right in Highland Park and Running Away Miltisport in Deerfield will get your old athletic shoes refurbished and to a new owner.

What do you do with your running or other athletic shoes when you are ready for a new pair?

If you are like many customers of Running Right in Highland Park or Running Away Miltisport in Deerfield, you would just as soon leave them at the store when you walk out with your new ones.

Did you know those shoes still have life? They could be walking around Chicago or perhaps they went to someone displaced by Hurricane Katrina or Super Storm Sandy.

“We had so many shoes left in the store and we didn’t want to throw them out,” Running Right owner Bill Moss said. He got in touch with Share Your Soles, an organization which refurbishes the shoes and finds them a home on feet in need. “A lot of them went to Katrina victims.”

Share Your Soles puts work into the shoes before passing them on. “She cleans them, replaces the sock liners and then distributes them,” Running Away Manager Brian Jacobson said. “It’s a great way to support a good cause.”

A representative of Share Your Soles comes by Running Right and Running Away once a week to get the shoes customers donate. Shoes which are no longer good for the pounding of a long run are still fine for walking around, according to Moss.
