Park District Plans 6.6% Tax Levy Hike

Taxes remain below 2010 levels despite increase next year.

Taxpayers will be contributing more to the Park District of Highland Park next year as the Board of Park Commissioners has proposed an increase in the real estate property tax levy next year.

Though taxes will go up next year, people are paying less than they were in 2009 when the Board taxes 10 percent, according to Board President Scott Meyers. “It’s still lower than it was three years ago when we lowered it 10 percent,” he said.

After a public hearing Nov. 19, the Board proposed a $10.4 million levy which will be set for a vote by the Commissioners at 6 p.m. Dec. 17. The increase will mean the owner of a $450,000 home will pay approximately $24 more than last year, according to a story in the Highland Park News.

The bulk of the increase will go to make facilities compliant with the American’s With Disabilities Act—approximately five percent—while the rest will be used to keep up with inflation, according to Meyers.
