Sailing Lessons

When I joined the North Shore Yacht Club two years ago as a student sailor, I had very little experience and knew not a single person. I was drawn by the waves and the wind, and a little adventure. I met Barney Ruttenberg on my first day sailing as I feebly attempted to rig my boat. With a firm handshake and broad smile, he introduced himself and proceeded to teach me basic knots and safety rules. I knew at that moment he was someone I could rely on.

With his honesty, commitment, and willingness to help (not to mention a great sense of humor!), I’ve grown to sincerely admire Barney since that first day on the beach. I’m certain that his perpetual positivity, unerring intuition and exceptional creativity will make him an indispensible addition to the Highland Park Park Board. As Park District Commissioner, I know that Barney will be just as genuinely invested in every cause that comes across his desk as he was with me on my first day of sailing.
