The 18th Annual Myra Rubenstein Weis Health Resource Center Luncheon Honors Highland Park Physician
The 18th annual Myra Rubenstein Weis (MRW) Health Resource Center Luncheon will honor Bruce E. Brockstein, MD, Medical Director of the Kellogg Cancer Centers at NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore), for his achievements in the field of oncology. In honoring Dr. Brockstein, the MRW Health Resource Center Luncheon on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, carries on a longstanding tradition of honoring an individual whose work embodies the spirit and mission of the MRW Health Resource Center.
“As this year’s honoree, Dr. Brockstein epitomizes the very best in medicine,” said Paul D. Goldstein, MD, co-founder of the MRW Health Resource Center. “Dr. Brockstein has been caring for patients with compassion, concern, and a level of quality that is unrivaled for over 25 years at NorthShore. His reputation among his peers is matched only by the way he is regarded by the thousands of patients who have come to him for care.”
Dr. Brockstein is the Division Head of Hematology/Oncology at NorthShore University HealthSystem, where he also serves as the Director of the Kellogg Cancer Centers and holds the Kellogg-Scanlon Chair in Oncology. Dr. Brockstein serves on the Faculty Practice Association Board of Directors, the Specialty Practice Care Network, and is the Immediate Past Chairman of the Cancer Committee. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine.

Dr. Brockstein earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine in 1990. After completing his residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, he continued his training with a postdoctoral fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Chicago Medical Center (including clinical trials research), where he also served on faculty for four years prior to arriving at NorthShore in 1999. He is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, and practices in his subspecialty fields of head and neck cancer, bone and soft tissue sarcomas, and malignant melanoma.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Brockstein serves as the Head and Neck Cancer editor and author for the electronic textbook UpToDate, and serves as a reviewer for numerous journals. He served on the Sarcoma Scientific Program Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, ASCO, from 2009-2011 and as the Chair of that committee for 2010.

He is an author or coauthor of numerous articles and papers in the fields of head and neck cancer and sarcoma that have been published in such journals as the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, Journal of the National Cancer Care Network, and Annals of Oncology. He has written several chapters to medical textbooks and has authored a textbook. Dr. Brockstein has been a frequent lecturer and presenter at national and international oncology conferences.
The 18th annual MRW Health Resource Center Luncheon is themed “Memory Matters” and is taking place on Wednesday, May 7th, 2014 at the Highland Park Country Club, located at 1201 Park Avenue West in Highland Park. In addition to honoring Dr. Brockstein, guests of the Luncheon will have the opportunity to hear from James Mastrianni, MD, PhD, Director of The Center for Comprehensive Care & Research on Memory Disorders at the University of Chicago, about the latest research. He’ll also share proactive steps to take and lifestyle choices to make in order to keep the mind young.
Tickets to the Luncheon are $85. Proceeds from the Luncheon will provide funding for Living in the Future (LIFE) Cancer Survivorship Program at NorthShore. LIFE connects cancer survivors to primary care physicians and local support networks and resources, including the Myra Rubenstein Weis Cancer Survivorship Seminars. These free educational lectures are open to the public and include topics of importance to cancer survivors, including nutrition, exercise and genetics. Funds raised from the 2014 Luncheon will also support diabetes education programming and other MRW health initiatives at NorthShore.
