'Dead' Highland Park Broker May Avoid Trial

Lawyer says a plea deal for man who vanished to Vegas might be in the works.

A plea deal could be in the works for a former Highland Park resident who was recently found after disappearing 32 years ago, The Chicago Tribune reports.

According to the Tribune, attorney Stephen Stein has had "serious discussions" with the state attorney general's office about resolving the case so that Arthur Gerald Jones doesn't have to face a felony identity and fraud trial.

Jones, 72, was arrested July 19 for fraud, burglary, obtaining and using personal identifying information of another person and possession of personal identifying information to establish false status or identity, according to a criminal complaint.

Jones, a former Chicago commodities broker, lived in Highland Park with his wife and three children before he was reported missing May 11, 1979. Jones was declared legally dead in 1986, with the date of death listed as the day he disappeared.

According to the Tribune, Jones lived in Las Vegas under the name Joseph Richard Sandelli for 10 years, working at a casino.
