HGTV to Air Show About Highwood's Pumpkin Fest

Did you see Highwood's third attempt to light 32,000 jack-o-lanterns? Then catch HGTV's 'Pumpkin Wars' on Halloween to see what you missed.

Highwood's third annual pumpkin festival sought to break three world records, including lighting 32,000 jack-o-lanterns at once.

Want Highland Park news in your inbox every morning? Subscribe to Patch's newsletter.

Whether or not that record was broken remains unknown, but one thing is certain: the festival was big enough to get itself documented on HGTV.

Home & Garden Television will air "Pumpkin Wars" on Halloween at 8 p.m. and again at 11 p.m. The program will focus on Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott as they travel to Highwood and Keene, N.H. to watch these two cities compete for most carved and displayed jack-o-lanterns.

"It’s such a massive, massive thing for what is truly a small community," the show's producer Danny Downing told the Highland Park News. "I think from what I’m seeing, they don’t like to do anything small here."

Check out the show next week. And, if you attended or helped out at this year's Pumpkin Fest, leave a comment and upload a photo.

I agree. It was a beautiful night in Highwood. Special thanks to Ilyse from Ripple Public Relations as she always does a wonderful job promoting these type of events. Also, a extra special shout out to a group of pumpkin heroes we never hear about, the men at public works, managed by Jeff Ponzi. These are the guys who build the scaffolding, set pumpkins, decorated the town, along with making it go away at the end. Great job. Oh yes, thank you Charlie and Eric. Don't forget to watch "pumpkin wars" Wednesday October 31st at the Silver Dollar Tavern @ 336 Greenbay rd in Highwood where we will have a viewing party at both 8pm+11pm. Also we have our Halloween party tonight the 26th and Saturday the 27th. I'm sure you can make it one of those days. $ilver Dollar Tavern........Because we care

Cellar Gate raises a BIG glass to Highwood and all who were up to their "pumpkin covered elbows" in the brain-storming, planning, not sleeping, gutting, building, volunteering, more gutting, scooping, fork-lifting, decorating ,problem-solving, publicizing, slipping, sliding, donating, baking, carving, more volunteering, laughing, crying, more carving, scaffold climbing, pumpkin lighting...and most of all...showing pride in this amazing, little town of Highwood!

Wow, Congratulations to Highwood, The Chamber of Commerce and the Highwood Special Events committees. I also want to echo the sentiments of Moe from the Silver Dollar to all of our fine public works employees, Jeff Ponsi and all the great efforts of our PR crew! You all pulled off the impossible. Let's not forget a huge Thanks to Jonathan Scott and his crew from HGTV for coming and helping put Highwood on the map!! We anxiously await the announcement on Halloween night, declaring Highwood the Guinness world record holders in all events!! Oh and one last favorable mention and one that cannot go unrecognized... A huge thank you must go out to Liz Berwald and the Bent Fork Bakery for her hours upon hours of Pumpkin Pie Baking (600 plus I believe) to insure that Highwood does indeed hold the " Most Pumpkin Pies lined up in a row" World Record! She and all who donated pies allowed us to blow this record out of the water by over 200 ft!! So Congrats Liz, I am sure your dreaming about pumpkin pies night after night!! You have done Highwood proud! Bottom line is, all involved did a magnificent job of planning, administrating and running this fantastic success called Pumpkinfest. I as the owner of The Hair Studio by Steve here in Highwood, applaud you all. From what I hear, these feelings are echoed by the community at large. We thank you all. Now, let's get planning on next years Fest and let's see how we can top this year!!!

Hey Steve, maybe next year they should have the fest on our side of town??? Now I can't wait to meet the owner of "the Bent Fork". She sounds pretty cool. Don't forget about next Wednesday the 31st. I'll see you at the next chamber meeting. By the way, when is it. I don't think they want the Silver Dollar to know........LOL.

Highwood is quite the dining and drinking destination on the North Shore. Even their weekly summer Farmers Markets are jammed packed drawing people from all over the Chicagoland area. It's like a huge festival complete with live bands on a weekly basis. They even cater to the military bases and host Highwood Home for the Holidays where they invite about 500 Navy personnel to help decorate the lawn in front of City Hall with lights and then treat them to dinner and even the opportunity to play on the bocce courts! The Silver Dollar is the Navy's choice on Fridays as the Sailors can safely step on and off the train directly in front of the establishment and enjoy discounts and camaraderie. The Dollar has quickly become THE Navy bar in Highwood.

7:26 am on Friday, October 26, 2012 I must say we had a terrific time at Highwood's Pumpkin Festival. Being the 3rd year we finally went and we had a great time. Saturday, October 20th was a beautiful evening and the people were enjoying carving pumpkins and also Highwood was booming with restaurants filled to their max. It was great to see. Just like the good old days of Highwood. Our cousins carved pumpkins and we had a great time dining at Buffo's Restaurant. Hats off to all that were involved.

When reading my story above you probably are wondering why I didn't use customary paragraphs inRead More composing this article. The fact is I did! However, those AOL/Patch software designers who recently put this new format together didn't allow for paragraphs, boldfacing and some other essential typographical aids that make stories more readable. I have no idea why. Hopefully this oversight will soon be corrected. Ed Collins, Contributor

Ed, I completely agree with your format comment - eliminating paragraphs and other aids makesRead More articles much less readable. Jacob, why the change? It isn't like you have to spend more money on printing pages. Please address.
