Highland Park Animal Shelter May Be Forced to Close

Tails of Hope May Have To Close For Lack of Funds.

This time last year, a Highland Park animal shelter had just saved 20 cats from a resident's garage.

Now, a year later, the same shelter may close due to a lack of funds needed to continue operating.

Tails of Hope is funded by donations, according to an announcement posted on Patch last week. Lately, the shelter's donations have shrunk. If the donations don't pick up, the shelter will shut down at the end of August or before.

"Please open your hearts and pocketbooks to this local cause," said Michael V Metzger in the announcement. "This is your only place in Highland Park where animals are sheltered and not put down."

Last June, the animal shelter, led by Kelly Moyer, rescued 20 Persian cats that had been kept without ventilation, heat, air conditioning or litter boxes in a Highland Park garage. At that time, Moyer predicted it would cost about $10,000 to pay for the time, effort and materials to help heal them.

"This does go on," she said at the time, "even in Highland Park."
