HP Boy Who Spent Night in Kayak Recovering at Home

The 9 year old, his cousin and aunt were stranded on Lake Michigan overnight last week.

The 9-year-old Highland Park boy who spent a harrowing night in a kayak on Lake Michigan last week with his cousin and aunt in Wisconsin is recuperating at home, his parents told the Chicago Tribune.

Thomas Alter, along with his 9-year-old cousin Zach Suri and Zach’s mom, Allison Alter, who are from Austin, TX, spent Thursday night in rental kayaks off the coast of Door County, WI. They were rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter the next day. They had staying in their kayaks all night and were treated for hypothermia, but otherwise all right.

Thomas’ parents, Leslie and Jay Alter, told the Tribune that they are grateful for all who helped in the search are rescue, calling Thursday “the longest night of our lives.”

The kayaks were pushed 10 miles offshore by strong winds that reached up to 14 knots, the article says.
