Schools Open; Wind Chill Advisory in Effect This Morning and Again Tonight

The National Weather Service has announced a wind chill advisory will again be in starting at 6 p.m. Thursday and continuing through 10 a.m. Friday.

After a brief hiatus, the dangerously low wind chills and bitter cold are back. 

A wind chill advisory is in effect through noon Thursday and again from 6 p.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday. Wind chill values could reach 20 to 25 below zero Thursday morning and between 20 to 30 below zero Thursday night and into Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service. 

Meanwhile, no local school districts reported school closings Tuesday on the Emergency Closing Center's websiteEarlier this month, the Chicago area saw a two-day stretch of extreme cold where temperatures in the negative teens and wind chill values of -40 to -50 were in the forecast.

The National Weather Service reports arctic air pushed temperature early Thursday into the single digits below zero. Gusty winds up to 30 mph will continue to push wind chills to 20 below zero through late Thursday morning. 

Temperatures will cool again Thursday night to several degrees below zero with wind gusts up to 25 mph. The combination will allow wind chill values to quickly fall to 20 to 30 below zero Thursday night. 

Frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes when exposed to such weather conditions. For those who must go outdoors, the National Weather Service reminds residents to wear hats and gloves. Pets should be brought indoors.
