Art Center Kicks Off Recycled Show Tonight

'There's something for every taste and every pocketbook,' event coordinator says.

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Trite? Perhaps.

But The Art Center of Highland Park puts this old aphorism to good use during its 23rd annual “Gogh Green” Recycled Art Sale that begins Friday evening. The center collects pre-owned artworks from galleries, estate sales and private collectors year-round, said Kate McQueeny, events coordinator for the not-for-profit organization.

“This is a great way to shop for art whether you’re a seasoned art collector or just a beginner,” she said. “There’s something for every taste and every pocketbook.”

The sale kicks off with an opening night event on July 29. Cost is $75 in advance or $85 at the door, with admission including live and silent auctions, appetizers and dessert. McQueeny said her organization was hoping for about 150 guests to attend.

“The advantage of coming [to the] opening night is that you get first dibs on the best stuff,” McQueeny said. “People are very excited to come and get the first look.”

After the special event, the art sale is free to the public and will be open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Aug. 18.

McQueeny said there will be a large variety of artworks for sale, ranging from paintings to jewelry items to decorative pieces. She said organizers were especially excited to have a small collection of textiles and prints by Israeli artist Calman Shemi.

Other highlights include contemporary mixed media artwork and a selection of bronzes.

All proceeds from the art sale go toward The Art Center’s education scholarship fund. Art donations are tax deductible and will be accepted until the day of the event.
