Jewish Music from the Dawn of the Millennium

With roots going back to Gregorian chants, Jewish music reflects the history of the world. Medieval love songs, fiery flamenco, Mediterranean lullabies and Renaissance choirs are all part of Jewish music's tuneful legacy, to be sung by the Lakeside Congregation's Choir on Sunday, April 29th at 3:00 pm (1221 County Line Road in Highland Park). The event is open to all and free of charge.

"Our chorus will fill Lakeside's sanctuary with the sounds of the very oldest Jewish music that still exists," says Lakeside Cantor Michael Davis. "I am so excited to share this unique music with the community."

The choir will perform music spanning more than four centuries, from extinct civilizations (medieval Egypt) and faraway lands (Moorish Spain). Included in the concert is a performance of the world's oldest notated Jewish music, more than 900 years old, which began with a Norman monk who converted to Judaism. Lost for most of its century, it was miraculously recovered over a century ago.
