'Game of Thrones' Gets 13 Emmy Nods

Highland Park native's HBO series nominated for Best Drama, Best Director.

A Highland Park native's HBO series received 13 Emmy nominations last week.

Dan Weiss, co-creator of , has been an avid fantasy fan since he was a kid growing up in Highland Park. Now his fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, has been nominated in 13 Emmy categories, including best drama series, best director and best screenwriting.

Weiss and his partner David Benioff are currently working on the show's second season, according to Weiss' father, Mike.

"We feel that just to be nominated in the first season for best show ... is a pretty high honor," Mike Weiss said in an email to Patch. "We are, to say the least, very proud parents."

In an before the show premiered in April, Weiss discussed the challenges of assembling the show's first season.

“It's a challenging adaptation, to be sure,” Weiss said. “HBO has been very generous, but no amount of generosity is going to turn a show like ours into 'Avatar' on the budget front. So yes, we have to be very careful about how and where we spend our money."
