Ravinia Preview: Sept. 1-4

Guster, Carrie Underwood and more this weekend.

Lynyrd Skynyrd
One of the most recognizable bands in rock takes the stage on Thursday night in what is sure to be a night filled with twangy rock ‘n roll.  Lynyrd Skynyrd, in their first performance ever at Ravinia, will perform the classics, including “Sweet Home Alabama,” for audiences eager for a side nostalgia with their tunes.

Doobie Brothers
Ravinia goes old school on Friday night when the Doobie Brothers get the chance to rock out. Celebrating over 40 years in existence, the Doobie Brothers will treat audiences to hits from albums spanning the past four decades, including “Listen to the Music,” “Takin’ it to the Streets” and “You Belong to Me.”

Guster and Jack’s Mannequin
After two nights of old tunes, Ravinia changes the record on Saturday with Guster and Jack’s Mannequin. Around since the '90s, Guster plays a smooth, rockin' style that involves crooning vocals, great lyrics and, perhaps most importantly, great guitar lines.

Liszt Arranges Schubert & Beethoven
Uzbek-born pianist Eldar Nebolsin is up next for Ravinia, where he’ll perform a fascinating before-and-after program presenting orignial works of Schubert and Beethoven. He’ll follow up that will additional works by those Viennese masters arranged for solo piano by Franz Liszt. Gramophone Magazine calls Nebolsin a “virtuoso of power and poetry.”

Carrie Underwood
Rounding out the Ravinia weekend comes one of country music’s (as well as pop’s) most famous performers. American Idol winner Carrie Underwood takes the stage with Ravinia Festival Orchestra playing along with her. She’ll perform some of her first hits as well as a few new ones. Come watch one of the most gorgeous female artists with one of the most sensational vocal talents in years; it’s not a show to be missed.
