Highland Park native Jeff Shapiro launched Real Urban Barbecue, located at 610 Central Avenue #177 in downtown Highland Park in November 2010.  In July 2012 Real Urban Barbecue opened the doors of their second location in Vernon Hills at 1260 South Milwaukee Avenue.  Prior, Jeff had worked for Lettuce Entertain You for 14 years at restaurants including Bones, RJ Grunts, Bub City, Pappagus and PJ Clarke’s.  He most recently served as director of operations of Carmichael’s Steak House in the West Loop for six years.

Shapiro has been winning trophies in the BBQ competition circuit for many years under the team name Dr. Deckle and Mr. Hide.  Well before “Urban Barbecue” became the trend it is today, Shapiro’s feverish passion has had him touring the major BBQ markets of Midwest, the Carolinas, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

Real Urban Barbecue specializes in dining, carryout, and catering.  The charming dining room seats a total of 100 guests, which includes a private event space for 30 – 40 guests.  The menu features homemade BBQ sauce and slow-smoked items like ribs, pulled pork, turkey, brisket and chicken slowly rotated on four Cookshack smokers capable of smoking 1600 lbs of meat daily.

Real Urban Barbecue has been featured on Chicago Magazine’s “Top Ten Hot List” in January 2011, Chicago Tribune’s “Top Ten Bites” in July 2011 and voted as the “North Shore’s Best BBQ” in August 2011 by the readers of Make It Better Magazine in their annual “Best Of” issue.  More recent accolades include being voted “Best Sandwich” in the Highland Park Patch 2012 Readers’ Choice and winning “Best Side Dish” for the Mac & Cheese at the 2012 Taste of Highland Park.

Love their sauce - nothing compares to it.. however everytime we buy their barbecue chicken whole it is pink in the inside and i end up throwing it out... the kids wont eat it... so buy the sauce and pour it on my own chicken... not sure why it isnt cooked through by RUB.

Why is this press release printed as news and not as an ad???
Bob Bernstein March 18, 2013 at 08:05 pm
Caroline, that pink is called a smoke ring and is exactly what you want on the chicken. Its on the ribs too.

I did not know about a smoke ring so thank you so much for clarifying... very interesting the smoke process of cooking..
