Former Highland Park Resident to Stand Trial for Sandusky Sex Abuse Cover-Up

Former Penn State President Graham Spanier, a Highland Park native, is accused of covering up sex abuse allegations against former football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Graham Spanier, a former Highland Park resident and 1966 graduate of Highland Park High School who was fired in Nov. 2011 as president of Penn State amidst the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, will have to stand trial on charges he was involved in a cover-up, reports the New York Times.

A judge determined there was enough evidence against Spanier, retired Penn State Vice President Gary Schultz and former athletic director Tim Curley to go to trial, according to the New York Times report.

On the day Spanier lost his job at Penn State, Highland Park High School removed a plaque recognizing him as a "distinguished graduate," reported Patch.

Spanier, Schultz and Curley face numerous charges including perjury, conspiracy and endangering the welfare of children and stand accused of failing to properly report abuse allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, according to the New York Times.

Sandusky was found guilty in 2012 of sexually abusing 10 boys and received a sentence of 30 to 60 years in prison, reported Patch.
