Man Indicted for Sixth DUI in Highland Park

Lake County Grand Jury charges three men for crimes committed in Highland Park.

Three men were indicted for crimes committed in Highland Park Wednesday by the Lake County Grand Jury including a charge for driving under the influence which will require prison time if the person is convicted.

David Cook, 53, of Milwaukee was stopped by Highland Park Police Oct. 11 in the 1600 block of Skokie Valley Road for improper lane usage, according to Deputy Highland Park Police Chief George Pfutzenreuter. After a further investigation, he was arrested for driving under the influence.

Cook is charged with a Class X felony because it is the sixth time he was stopped for the same offense, according to Lake County State’s Attorney Communication Director Cynthia Vargas. If convicted, Cook faces between six and 30 years in prison with no possibility for probation. He is also charged with aggravated driving with a suspended license, a Class 4 Felony. He will be arraigned Friday in Lake County Criminal Court in Waukegan at which time he will have the opportunity to plead not guilty or guilty.

Angel Avila-Gonzalez, 35, of Highwood was stopped by Highland Park Nov. 3 in the 1900 block of Sheridan Road for improper lane usage, according to Pfutzenreuter. After a further investigation, he was arrested for driving under the influence.

Avila-Gonzalez was indicted by the Grand Jury for aggravated driving under the influence, a Class 2 Felony, and aggravated driving with a suspended license, a Class 4 Felony. He faces between four and 10 years in jail if convicted. He will be arraigned Friday in Lake County Criminal Court in Waukegan at which time he will have the opportunity to plead not guilty or guilty.

Lindsay Campbell of Chicago contacted Highland Park Police June 15 reporting he was held at gunpoint in an attempted armed robbery attempt. It turned out the claim was false and he was charged with felony disorderly conduct, a Class 4 Felony, by the grand jury Wednesday. He faces between one and three years in jail if convicted. He will be arraigned Dec. 5 in Lake County Criminal Court in Waukegan at which time he will have the opportunity to plead not guilty or guilty.
