District 113 Celebrates Highest-Ever ACT Scores

The District 113 Class of 2011 earned a significant distinction this week.

The District 113 Class of 2011 earned a significant distinction this week. They posted the highest average ACT score in District 113 history. In every category tested, the student scores matched or outperformed the scores posted in previous years.

Both and can boast significant growth in student achievement on the ACT. Subjects tested within the ACT are curriculum-based and include: English, math, reading, and science. In addition, a composite score is determined. The composite score for 2011 graduates from Deerfield High School was 27.1 and from Highland Park High School was 26. District 113 students’ scores are well above state and national averages, 20.9 and 21.1 respectively.

Dr. George Fornero, Superintendent of District 113, commented on these outstanding test results. He stated, “We are proud of these results but not surprised. Our students are committed to academic study and our teachers and staff support them every step of the way. We provide a rigorous curriculum for students and ensure that their skills are developed fully. Students pursue a variety of post-high school paths, yet we strive to prepare each and every student for
future success.”

While not all District 113 students attend four-year colleges after graduation, the vast majority do. In fact, students from District 113 matriculate to some of the best colleges and universities in the nation. Last year, District 113 students attended Harvard, Yale, Princeton, the University of Chicago, many Big-Ten schools, and other highly selective public universities.

The outstanding reputation of both Deerfield and Highland Park is a significant
factor when admissions officers make final decisions about acceptance. According to Aliza Gilbert, college counselor at HPHS, admissions officers believe that District 113 provides an outstanding high school experience for students. Gilbert stated, “We have over 200 colleges that visit our school each fall. Colleges want our students to attend their schools.”
