District 113 Students Selected as Presidential Scholar Candidates
500 semifinalists will be selected in April and Scholars will be announced in May.
Ten District 113 students have been selected as candidates for the United States
Presidential Scholar Program.
The program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize and honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. In 1979, the program was expanded to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative and performing arts.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the United States Department of Education recently announced candidates for this year’s program. Students selected from Deerfield High School include Elaine Arbaugh, Kerry Glass, David Lichko, Anna Saplitski and Mark Shapiro. Students selected from include Jonathan Copeland, Alana Lidawer, Ari Roitman, Michael Schoof and Kellen Svetov.

Scholars are chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas---academic and artistic success, leadership, and involvement in school and the community---and represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth. 500 semifinalists will be selected in April and Scholars will be
announced in May. Annually, up to 141 students are picked to become U.S.
Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
Scholars are invited to Washington, D.C. in June to participate in National Recognition Weekend.
