Highland Park's Population Shrinks by 1,600

Highland Park's population is decreasing according to 2010 Census.

Pioneer Press and TribLocal have some interesting news about Highland Park's population, which dropped 5.1 percent in the last 10 years, according to recently released U.S. Census data.

Highland Park's 2010 population of 29,763 residents was 1,602 less than in 2000. Populations decreased throughout the North Shore, but Highland Park and Bannockburn were the only two places in Lake County to see decreases in the Hispanic population, according to Pioneer Press. Hispanics made up 8.9 percent of the population in 2000 and only 7.28 percent in 2010.

Highwood's population did the exact opposite. The community grew 30.5 percent, from 4,143 residents in 2000 to 5,405 in 2010, according to Pioneer Press. Highwood's Hispanic population also increased by 18.64 percent.

TribLocal points out that many North Shore communities saw populations decline less dramatically than in Highland Park. Winnetka and Wilmette, for example, both saw population declines of about only two percent, becaue they also saw increases in minority populations. For example, Wilmette’s Asian population increased by 29.4 percent.
