North Shore Family Hosts 10th Annual Fundraising Event In Support of Leukemia Research

Pam Katten, a native of Chicago and Winnetka, lost her battle with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in 2002 when she was just 41 years old. Her battle with AML followed her treatment for another blood cancer, Hodgkin lymphoma, seven years earlier. In memory of Pam, her family hosts its 10th annual "PamJam" benefit party on Saturday, November 17 at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park.

"Pam fought a courageous battle against leukemia, enduring numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, as well as a stem cell transplant. Through it all, she dedicated herself to raising funds for leukemia research in order to help others beat cancer," said her father Mel Katten, of Winnetka.

To fulfill Pam's goal, the Katten family formed the Pamela B. Katten Memorial Leukemia Research Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charitable foundation that raises funds for cancer research. Since 2002, the Foundation has donated more than $1.4 million and countless hours of volunteer work to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to continue Pam's battle.

Proceeds raised at the PamJam go primarily towards funding cancer research through LLS.

"The PamJam event is the type of event my mom loved: music, candy, friends, family and most importantly raising money for a worthwhile cause," said Max Katten Popkin, Pam's son. He adds that the cause is urgent because Pam "never wanted other parents to be sick in front of their kids and I do not want any other kids to have to witness their parent slowly dying."

"Pam was an extraordinary woman beloved as a mother, daughter, sister and friend," said her sister, Betsy Katten of Evanston.

Pam attended New Trier High School and Northwestern University before heading to New York for law school. Pam achieved a lot proefssionally, "but despite all of her accomplishments in the courtroom, her greatest source of pride was her son Max," said Betsy Katten.
