Recording her first of three full-length CD’s at age 16, Champaign native Megan Johns has played over 300 shows during the last decade, including in the UK & France. Her first recording, Dirty Shoes, was written almost in secret during early adolescence with songs that displayed an emotional depth and understanding of the world beyond her years, one reviewer describing the record as “Alternative folk rock with unlikely flashes of Mazzy Star.” Framed by a sprinkling of string arrangements, sax, clarinet & a dash of percussive pop glitter, Dirty Shoes tells stories of a day rambling through this town of coffee shops, dreamers, maniacs and bums. Her latest solo CD, Hey, Lonely, recorded by Adam Schmitt, encapsulates years of honing both her guitar skills & inventive songcraft, showcasing emotional themes, & unique vocal melodies --all underpinned by heavy down picking of almost metal-like rhythms. Comparisons swing more to Tori Amos, Smashing Pumpkins & Ani DiFranco with a backing band that circulates strings, bass, horns, drums & more. One journalist aptly sums up Hey, Lonely’s sound, saying, "Johns creates music that is at once sweet and biting: the languid tone of her voice providing a perfect lace overlay to the harder-rocking arrangements beneath them." Megan Johns currently performs her songs solo, or with her full backing band, Moonwish. Her Madame ZUZU’s appearance on Friday, January 4th will include string accompaniment from violinist, Sara Sasaki & aunt & viola player, Susan Johns. meganjohns.bandcamp.com facebook.com/meganjohnsmusic facebook.com/moonwishmusic
