Foreign Film Classic: Lebanon

At NSSC, Northfield Location:  with Reid Schultz, Filmmaker, Academic, Columbia College Faculty.  Screening and discussion.

Directed by Samuel Maoz, 2009, Israel, 90 min.

Winner of Best Film at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, Lebanon follows four Israeli soldiers who operate a tank in the 1982 Lebanon war. Based on the filmmaker's real life experiences, the film's brilliant aesthetic choice is to remain for the entire film inside the tank. Creating a claustrophobic view of the outside world, the horrors of war are seen through the tank's viewfinder as we see fear, panic, and destruction the same way these soldiers would. This is one of the most powerful and emotional antiwar films ever made.
