Highwood's Third Annual Garlic Fest

HIGHWOOD, IL (AUGUST 14, 2013) — In its third year,
Highwood’s Garlic Fest will attract waves of people
with the smell of garlic wafting through town on Wednesday, August 14th
from 4-9pm. Held in conjunction with the Evening Gourmet Farmers Market at
Everts Park (130 Highwood Avenue), Garlic Fest will showcase the ever-popular
flavor (and smell) of garlic, known for its culinary and medicinal purposes. Attendees
can sample a variety of garlic creations from out-of-the-ordinary garlic ice
cream, cookies,
cupcakes, scones, chocolates and martinis, to the more traditional savory options of seafood,
pastas, sauces, soups, breads and
butters.

The smell
of garlic will surely lure people from all over the Midwest to Highwood’s Third
Annual Garlic Fest, as well as the evening emcee, radio personality and
co-anchor of the WBBM Noon Business Hour, Sherman Kaplan!

Additionally,
Highwood will crown its third Garlic Queen.  The competition will start at 7pm, with the winner announced
at 8pm.  Contestants will have up
to one minute to explain why she should be the next reigning Garlic Queen.
Judging will be based on the candidates’ speech (25%), appearance (25%), and audience
applause (50%). Ms. Susie Tingle, 2012 Garlic Queen, will pass down bragging
rights and adorn the new Garlic Queen with her own tiara and cape to keep.

Not only
does the winner pride herself on having the distinguished title, she also has
the opportunity to make appearances at all major upcoming Highwood events,
including riding in the Pumpkin Fest Parade, addressing local military during
Highwood for the Holidays, and more. Anyone 18 or older can sign up at Jordan
Joseph Encore, 417 Sheridan Road, Highwood, or by completing a form online at http://www.celebratehighwood.com/garlic.html.

Aside from
crowning a new Garlic Queen, there will be two competitions for the Tastiest
Garlic Creations:

1.     The annual People’s
Choice Competition in the categories of Sweet and Savory, where festival goers
will be able to vote for their favorites in each category. Last year’s winner
for “Best Sweet Garlic Creation” was the garlic chocolate cookie from
Maryann’s Sweet Treats &
Edible Art
, while the people’s choice for “Best Savory Garlic Creation” was
the Garlic Blue Dressing from Pigtale Twist!

2.
And
new this year, Garlic Fest welcomes a second competition judged by award
winning Garlic Chef, Chicago’s own Alan Lake, who is three-time winner of the Delray Beach
Garlic Festival’s Professional Chef Competition.  Author of The Garlic Manifesto, Chef Lake will
be on-site to weigh in on the Festivals’ finest garlic creations.  Attendees can visit Chef Lake
throughout the fest at his booth where he will share his garlic stories,
recipes, tips and have garlic posters to autograph.

Winners of
both competitions will be announced before the crowning of the new Garlic Queen
at 8pm.

This
fun, food-filled event will cater to all the stinky breath needs with plenty of
mints on hand, along with live music and exciting competitions. Thousands of
people are to be expected at Garlic Fest this year.
