Firefighter’s 16-Month-Old With Cancer Prompts Department Blood Drive

Kylia's dad is a Purple Heart recipient, so the department chose Memorial Day Weekend as the perfect time to organize the blood drive, which is being held Saturday.

At Kylia Abbott’s one-year checkup, doctors discovered that the little girl has stage four neuroblastoma, a high-risk cancer.

Kylia is now 16 months old and her aggressive treatment includes frequent blood transfusions, which help her stay alert when the cancer weakens her bone marrow.

This is why the Highland Park Fire Department, where Kylia’s dad, Nathan Abbot works, is holding a blood drive Saturday in Kylia’s honor. They picked Memorial Day Weekend because Nathan Abbot is a U.S. Marine veteran and Purple Heart recipient.
