City Seeks Student Commissioners

Highland Park High School students can have the opportunity to get a firsthand look at municipal government.

The following information is provided by Township High School District 113.

CITY OF HIGHLAND PARK SEEKS STUDENT COMMISSIONERS

The City of Highland Park has worked together with local high schools in the past to invite high school students to expand real governmental experience by having student members on Commissions. This has been a great opportunity for the students to learn about local government and see democracy in action; additionally, it has proven to be a great asset to the City.

Student commissioners begin their term in January of junior year until graduation.  Each student is able to serve on the Commission or Task Force he/she is interested in and will act as an ex-officio member of the commission without a vote, but meet the same expectations as other members on the respective commission, task force or board.

A list of the City’s boards, commissions and task forces can be found at: www.cityhpil.com/boardsandcommissions. The link to the online application for student commissioners is www.cityhpil.com/studentcommission. The deadline for online applications this year is December 6, 2013.

COLLEGE BOUND OPPORTUNITIES ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

College Bound Opportunities (CBO) is accepting applications from current juniors for its scholarship program for students in Districts 113 and 115. The deadline to apply is January 8, 2014.

CBO is geared toward students from low-income families who would benefit from the help of a mentor to guide them through the college application process and additionally through college up to the point of graduation. Applicants should be serious students who have a strong drive to succeed in college and strong academic potential. Most importantly, they should be students who are unlikely to attend a four-year college without the help of a mentor to guide them.

The CBO scholarship program is only eight years old and has grown from its initial class of nine students to include 121 students, 22 alumni and over 130 mentors.  CBO is very proud that 97% of CBO students who entered college have either graduated or are still attending.

The general guidelines for selection are as follows:

--A critical need for a mentor to help guide the student through the college process and through the student’s four years of college.

--A minimum grade point average of 2.8 (District 113) or 3.8 (District 115).

--First generation in family to attend college, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

--A household income of not more than $60,000 for a family of four, barring any extraordinary circumstances.

For more information about CBO, visit the website at ww.CBO4success.org.  Should you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Susan Bell, CBO Executive Director at 847-507-2627/sbell.cbo@gmail.com or HPHS College Counselors, Aliza Gilbert 224-765-2055/agilbert@dist113.org or Bill Morrison 224-765-2056/wmorrison@dist113.org.
