What began as a dream of Highland Park Human Relations Commissioner Cheryl Levi has become one of the premier events in the area honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. drawing more than 1,400 people today at the Recreation Center of Highland Park.

Levi’s effort drew 250 people in 2010 and the event has grown over the years drawing more and more community support each time, according to Human Relations Commissioner and event organizer Dawn Locascio.

Sponsored by the Park District of Highland Park and Highland Park’s Human Relations Commission, the event will included packaging toiletries for PADS, creating valentine messages for American troops, filling book bags for distribution at the North Shore Health Center, quilting, making items for animals at pet shelters.

Listen to Locascio describe the events during a Patch video tour.
