Relay For Life Spawns Hope

Hundreds circle Adams Field track Saturday to raise awareness of cancer and money to fight it.

Circling the Adams Field track with a message of hope, more than 300 people participated in the annual at Deerfield High School. The event is a major fundraising and awareness event sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Donna Lee Caringella of Highland Park told the crowd at the opening ceremonies about her diagnosis just under two years ago and how she is now in remission. Deerfield’s Janet Goldberg talked to Patch about her 13-year battle with the disease.

“When something stops working my doctor tells me about something new to try,” Goldberg said of her survival for seven years with Stage 4 Cancer.

Mayor Harriet Rosenthal put things in perspective for everyone with her opening remarks. “All of us have been touched by this hideous disease one way or another,” she said.

On Monday Patch will have a more detailed report of the 12-hour event which finished at 6 a.m. today.
