What's the Best Advice Dad Ever Gave You?

In honor of Father's Day, the Highland Park Patch asked readers on Facebook to share the best advice their father ever gave them.

Motherly advice is often driven by emotion and the need to protect, while lessons handed down from dad tend to be more straightforward and practical, applying to the challenges of everyday life, and sticking with you when you need it most.

For Father's Day, our Highland Park Patch Facebook readers shared some of the best advice they have received from their dads over the years. Hey dad! We're still using it!

Marry her!

For every dollar you make, save a dollar!

Never use the word "only" in front of a dollar sign.

My father, who died just a couple of weeks ago, told me 30 years ago to always arrive 15 minutes early. I believe it is the only advice of his that I have always followed.

Spend less than you make.

Moderation in everything. As a teenager it made me crazy. Now I get it.

Half of life sucks, choose to focus on the other half.

Do what you love. Because you'll be doing it the rest of your life.

I was 19 and madly in love with the boy who was going to become my husband. I wandered into a boutique in Highland Park and found a beautiful houndstooth pantsuit, with a stylish Edwardian jacket. I called home hoping my mom would answer the phone. Instead my wonderful, yet frugal dad answered the phone. I stammered, "Daddy if you let me get this outfit, I'll be totally happy. I'll never ask you for anything ever! I'll be completely happy!" My wise dad took a moment and said, "Sweetheart, if you promise me that you'll remember that you had one moment in your life when you were totally happy and wanted nothing, I'll get you that outfit." He made me swear to remember the feeling. That moment, that gift from my dad has gotten me through some of life's most difficult challenges. THANKS DAD!!
