Random Acts of Art(s)

Random Acts of Art(s) is a project that includes all art forms, including the 'art' of moving people to action and site specific events.

For years I've been doing little random acts of art. Art of all types (that's why the 's' is in parentheses) like creating an art walk in downtown HP, rock stacks on the beach, notes of encouragement and inspiration left in books on bookstore shelves and the 'pay it behind' movement which I still see happening.

The purpose of this is to bring attention to the details, the little things that make life great, like framing an installation under a ravine bench to encourage people to sit for a moment and take in the view, or the snow faces I make on trees (weather permitting).

I used to think I was just a 'monkeybrain' and a bit weird, but then I found the work of Andy Goldsworthy, Improv Everywhere and the flash mob movement and I knew it wasn't just a 'phase', it is my art form.

This recent piece, a natural installation on Ravine Beach, included the help of Dina Kaplan, Don and Peggy Shearns and my son Liam. We even had spectators for a little bit and I went back later in the day to watch others interact with our temporary piece, including people wondering and taking photos.

The project is growing now and I'm going to make it a point to include others and share not only the work, but the generation of ideas so now 'tag' -- you're it! Join our group of 'random actors' and help us showcase Highland Park as a place of beauty, creativity and fun.
