On 'Cue: Taking A BBQ Trip

Real Urban BBQ owner takes a trip to Kansas City in search of great barbecue.

After my recent trip to Kansas City, I have confirmed that we are doing it right in Highland Park, IL!

I recently returned from a 48-hour road trip where I ate at some of Kansas City’s best BBQ restaurants. All in all, I ate at 10 BBQ hotspots – some of which helped pave the way to how we serve BBQ today. I also had the opportunity to visit and meet the owners of these fine establishments.

Here’s a quick fact: Real Urban Barbecue is currently serving 3000 lbs of brisket a week, placing us among some of the highest-volume brisket locations in the area. I tried the brisket at all 10 Kansas City locations, and after a few tastings I immediately knew that RUB had hit the spot back in the North Shore.  If you buy the best quality products and smoke it daily, the result speaks for itself!

Inspired by the sweet BBQ style of Kansas City – similar to our #1 original “Sweet” sauce – I am eager to throw some new flavor profiles into the game.

I have been playing with seasonal produce, creating sauces ranging from Sweet Pumpkin BBQ to Cranberry BBQ.  Right now in our kitchen you can find ingredients from chipotle and jalapeño peppers to root beer, apples, and Vidalia onions.  Once of which we recently combined with our sweet sauce, hitting an immediate home run. (If you come in and ask for a preview, we will gladly give you a sneak peak.)  And that is only the beginning…
