Gun Sense Needed

The League of Women Voters of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff believes that the proliferation of semi-automatic assault weapons and large capacity ammo clips is a major health and safety threat.

The League of Women Voters of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff believes that the proliferation of semi-automatic assault weapons and large capacity ammo clips is a major health and safety threat.  The League supports strong federal and state measures to limit the accessibility and regulate the ownership of these items by private citizens.  In addition, the League believes that there should be enforcement of strict penalties for improper possession of and crimes committed with assault weapons and high-capacity ammo clips and the adequate allocation of resources to better regulate and monitor gun dealers.

When the League of Women Voters of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff recently reviewed mass murders, most of the weapons used were assault weapons or semi- automatic handguns.  The increased lethality is because large capacity ammunition magazines enable a shooter to rapidly fire off many rounds without having to reload the firearm.  Large capacity ammunition magazines have made possible some of the worst mass murders ever committed.

Given the heartbreaking killing of young, innocent children in what should have been a safe learning environment; it is clearly time that our state and federal legislators prohibit the buying of guns with high-capacity magazines and close the loophole that allows people to buy guns at gun shows in most states without a criminal background check.  Most Americans, and most gun owners, seem to indicate that they would support such sensible gun policies.  This is not about being “anti-gun” or “gun control”, this is about sensible gun policies for our health and safety.  Please join the League of Women Voters in requesting that our legislators pass such sensible laws, thus becoming good role models to our children.

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding
of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. For more information, please visit our website www.lwv-lflb.org We welcome men and women to become members. Eric has proved my point. This isn't about guns. This is about the demonization and marginalization of anyone who opposes Democrats. It's the same crap no matter what happens. Every crisis brings on the same response now. Hurricane? Republicans' fault. Financial disaster? Republicans' fault. Blood in the streets? Republicans' fault. Bad weather? Republicans' fault. Some crazy guy shoots up a bunch of kids and now every gun owner is accused of being a paranoid nut case. Are there any reasonable Democrats out there who will stand up and put a stop to this?
Eric Grenier January 15, 2013 at 10:26 PM
Nope, I do not blame Republicans for this. What I've read, and the one person I know who believes all of this paranoia, they distrust all of the government and consider Republicans a threat, too. Many responsible gun owners and collectors know an assault weapons ban and background checks for mental illness and magazine restrictions are no threat to 2nd Amendment rights. Again - "Well regulated".

@Eric - maybe we need a mental health check before we allow some people to post on the internet or otherwise express their free speech rights? Is that the next step for the "progressives" such as yourself. As for your "well regulated militia" comment, the Supreme Court has already decided that means all people - no matter how many times your side wants to keep changing the definition.

Does the league of women voters of LF/LB even know what a semi automatic gun is? I bet not.
Disband LOWV January 18, 2013 at 02:02 AM
My question is. Who really gives a crap what the LOWV thinks? They are as corrupt as the AARP. If the LOWV believes in what they spew. Then why doesn't each one of their members place a large sign on the front door of their homes stating that this a gun free house? I think We the people should BAN the LOWV. It is quite apparent that they are a very dangerous organization. Or maybe we should tell them when they can meet, how many may attend and of course for all of our safety they will need to walk to the meetings. Cars are way to dangerous for people like them to be driving.
