When Should I Book My Holiday Travel?

If making arrangements for holiday season travel is the last thing on your mind, unfortunately, you may already be a bit behind. According to a survey conducted by Travel Leaders Group, the majority of travel agents would say that reservations for December travel should have been made in June – especially if you intend to fly. Nearly 59 percent of agents recommend booking air travel for Thanksgiving at least six months in advance, and the percentage increases to almost 75 for Christmas travel.

There’s no reason to panic – your travel professional is ready to help you make your reservations – but the sooner you can confirm your plans, the better. For the past few years, airlines have repeatedly trimmed flight schedules to save fuel, maintenance and staffing costs, and that’s in addition to mergers that have reduced overall capacity. The result is greater demand for a smaller number of flights and seats, making it essential to book as early as possible.

Another change to air travel is the growing number of additional fees for services that used to be complimentary. Many airlines now charge a per-piece fee for checked bags; some “low fare” carriers are beginning to charge for carry-on bags as well, which may cause you to reconsider your packing strategy.

Depending on the airline, you may be offered – for a fee, unless you’re a frequent flyer – some extra leg room (which can be very welcome, especially on a long flight), early boarding privileges, or WiFi access during flight. Many airlines still offer complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, but a substantial snack or meal will set you back a few dollars.

Fortunately, your travel professional can find the best travel and lodging options for you and help you decide which (if any) extra fees you want to pay.

Regardless of when you decide to book your holiday travel, agents do their best for their clients at all times, and have been known to produce near-miracles on short notice. But, waiting until the last minute is a risk that holiday travelers are never advised to take.

By the way, the “six months or more in advance” guideline means it’s time to talk with your travel professional about Spring Break. But, be sure to get your holiday plans settled first!

Happy planning!
