Richard Calica, Children's Advocate, Dies

Highland Park resident was 67.

Richard H. Calica, a nationally recognized children’s advocate and Highland Park resident, died Sunday at home after a brief illness. He was 67.

Calica was nationally recognized for his expertise as a thinker; innovator and child welfare advocate who devoted his career to improving the lives of abused and neglected children and their families. He was admired, respected and loved by students, staff, colleagues and friends, according to information provided by Chicago Jewish Funerals.

Serving as the director of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services from 2011-2013, Calica took that job after more than 30 years as the Executive Director of the Juvenile Protective Association.

The beloved husband of 47 years of Judith (nee Mozarsky), Calica was also the loving father of Andrew (Jacqueline) and adoring grandfather of one-year old Leo Jonathan.  He is also survived by his brothers, Arnold and Dan. Richard.
