Elderly Driver Crashes into Binny's, Ignites Vodka

The store's sprinkler system helped firefighters get control of a Thursday morning fire at Binny's Beverage Depot in Highland Park after an elderly driver crashed through the store window, igniting a liquor display.

An 84-year-old Northbrook woman plowed her white BMW into Binny's Beverage Depot in Highland Park Thursday, setting fire to display boxes of vodka and gin, reported the Chicago Tribune.

The crash occurred at about 10 a.m. Thursday at the store, located at 153 Skokie Valley Rd., in Highland Park, reported Patch.

"The flames must have been five feet tall," driver Marty Anderson told the Chicago Tribune. "And I don’t drink. I’ve never had a drink in my life."

Anderson, along with a Binny's employee, were taken to Highland Park Hospital where they were treated and released for minor injuries, according to reports.

Anderson said she believes her car’s accelerator stuck and caused her to jump the curb into the storefront, according to the Tribune. Police are still investigating the cause.

About $100,000 worth of alcohol was destroyed in the incident, reported the Daily Herald.
