Glenview Teen Charged In Winnetka Stabbing

A Glenview teen faces felony attempted murder charges after a double stabbing in Winnetka Thursday night. One teen is hospitalized with a serious puncture wound to the chest, while another was treated for minor injuries and released.

There were no fatalities in a Thursday night stabbing on the 1400 block of Scott Avenue in Winnetka, according to Winnetka Chief of Police Patrick Kreis.

Mitchell S. Silverstein, 17, of Glenview, was charged with felony attempted first degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, police say.

An unnamed 17-year-old male was transported to Evanston Hospital with a "serious puncture wound [to the chest] that required immediate response," Kreis said at a Friday press conference. He is expected to recover from the injuries.

A 16-year-old male was treated and released from the hospital with a knife wound on his hand, which he incurred while trying to stop Silverstein, police say.

At about 7:15 p.m. on March 28, the Winnetka Police Department received a 911 call regarding an altercation on the 1400 block of Scott Ave., where police say they found five male teenagers who had been involved in an altercation that began when one teenager took someone else's iPhone.

After the altercation, four of the teens tried to leave the scene in a car, but the car collided with a tree about four houses down, according to police.

Silverstein chased the car on foot and stabbed the victims near the collision, according to police.

Silverstein "did not have anything stolen from him, and the offender had no cause whatsoever, no justification, to chase down and stab in the chest the victim," Kreis said. "We've conducted an investigation and determined that Mr. Silverstein's actions were grossly inappropriate, illegal and dangerous to the community."

"From time to time, there are other altercations that may occur over property. Those pale in comparison when it comes to someone stabbing people," Kreis added.

All five people involved in the incident are residents of the New Trier Township, though police would not provide any other information about the victims or those involved.

Silverstein will appear in bond court Saturday, March 30 at the Cook County Courthouse in Chicago.

"I do not anticipate anyone else being charged," Kreis said.

"The community should know although this is a serious matter, it is an isolated one involving a small group of people and the lone offender has been arrested and removed from the community," Kreis added.
