The man had gone canoeing with a 49-year-old Lisle resident, according to the Tribune. When the canoe tipped over, the Lisle man swam to shore and knocked on cottages until he reached the one where they had launched the canoe from, according to The Door County Advocate. The Highland Park man stayed with the canoe.

Wisconsin officials were unable to find the man or the canoe after three hours of searching on Sunday and resumed the search Monday and then again Tuesday morning. Door County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Gary Behling told The Door County Advocate that the effort has shifted from a possible rescue to a recovery operation. Because the water temperature was around 49 degrees, hypothermia could have set quickly, according to the Advocate.
