Police Blotter: Bomb Squad Checks Out Suspicious Briefcase

The following arrest information was supplied by the Deerfield Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Suspicious incident

Police received a call from a woman pedestrian in the area of Second Street and Green Bay Road who observed a large suitcase that had been placed against the Citibank sign located approximately 75 feet in front of the bank building. The Highland Park Police Department aided by officers from Deerfield and Lake Forest closed off vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area and contacted the Waukegan Bomb Squad and Cook County Explosive Detection K-9. Upon inspection by the Bomb Squad, the suitcase was determined to be empty and devoid of any hazardous material. Traffic to the area resumed at 6 p.m. Further investigation continues regarding who may have placed the suitcase at that location.

Criminal damage to vehicle

Police are investigating a report of a criminal damage to vehicle. It was reported unknown person (or vehicle) damaged the left rear taillight on a vehicle parked in the 3000 block of Marshall Road, Highland Park, Il. Mud and small scuff mark also located on left rear panel area of car.

Theft of lost property

Alejandra Ramirez-Merida, 21, of the 200 block of East Skokie Highway, Lake Bluff, was arrested and charged with theft on May 15, after police responded to a report from an individual who had accidentally left an Iphone behind on a counter while shopping. Ramirez-Merida was released on a personal recognizance bond with a court date of June 27, 2012 at 301 Greenleaf Street, Waukegan, Illinois.

Burglary to motor vehicle

Police are investigating a delayed report of a burglary to motor vehicle. It was reported that an unlocked vehicle was unlawfully entered. A red Coach clutch wallet, cash, Social Security Card and drivers license was taken. The incident occurred in the 900 block of Pleasant Avenue, Highland Park.

Possession of cannabis

Lee Rudy, 42, of the 26000 block of N. Walnut, Mundelein, was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis and failure to wear seat belt after being stopped by police in the 1300 block of Half Day Road, Highland Park. Rudy was released on a personal recognizance bond with a court date of June 11, 2012 at 18 N. County Street, Waukegan, Illinois. 

Retail theft

Enrique Capote, 19, of the 900 block of Central Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested and charged with retail theft on May 17, 2012 after police responded to a report of an individual shoplifting in the 2000 block of Skokie Valley Road, Highland Park. Capote was released on a personal recognizance bond with a court date of June 11, 2012 at 18 N. County Street, Waukegan, Illinois.

Driving under the influence

Michael Baldino, 22, of the 1400 block of Braxton Road, Libertyville, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and speeding after being stopped by police in the 1900 of Skokie Valley Road, Highland Park. Baldino was released on a personal recognizance bond with a court date of June 15, 2012 at 18 North County Street, Waukegan, Illinois.

Jessica Elicea, 23, of the 11900 block of W. 33rd Street, Zion, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, open transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage, driving while license suspended and speeding after being stopped by police near the intersection of Park Avenue West and Skokie Valley Road, Highland Park. Elicea was released on a personal recognizance bond with a court date of June 22, 2012 at 18 North County Street, Waukegan, Illinois.

Richard Goldman, 47, of the 1400 block of Glencoe Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, improper lane usage and uninsured motor vehicle after being stopped by police near the intersection of Clavey Road and Skokie Valley Road, Highland Park. Goldman was released on a personal recognizance bond with a court date of June 22, 2012 at 18 North County Street, Waukegan, Illinois.

Antonio Cortez-Salinas, 31, of the 1200 block of 12th Street, Northfield, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, improper lane usage and driving while license suspended after being stopped by police in the 200 block of the Edens Expressway, Highland Park. Cortez-Salinas was released on a personal recognizance bond with a court date of June 8, 2012 at 18 North County Street, Waukegan, Illinois.

Financial identity theft

Zikria Mohammed, 21, of the 4300 block of W. Lake Avenue, Glenview, was arrested and charged with financial identity theft and burglary to motor vehicle after police were called to a report of a theft where a set of keys and a cell phone were accidentally mislaid and taken. The keys were later found inside of the complainants’ vehicle. Upon inspection, a wallet, phone charger and debit card was taken while parked in the 100 of Skokie Valley Road, Highland Park. Unauthorized charges were found made on the debit card at Northbrook Court. Mohammed was transported to bond court at 18 North County Street, Waukegan, Illinois pending court date. 

Sale of tobacco to minor

Stuart Carlin, 63, of the 4000 block of Douglas Drive, Zion, was cited with sale of tobacco to minor after police conducted a tobacco compliance check on a business in the 0-55 block of Skokie Valley Road, Highland Park. Carlin is expected in Administrative court on June 7, 2012 at City Hall, 1707 St. Johns Avenue, Highland Park, Illinois.

Lorenz Werhane, 60, of the 2700 block of Fort Sheridan Avenue, Highland Park, was cited with sale of tobacco to minor after police conducted a tobacco compliance check on a business in the 1900 block of Second Street, Highland Park. Werhane is expected in Administrative court on June 7, 2012 at City Hall, 1707 St. Johns Avenue, Highland Park, Illinois.

Theft

Police are investigating a delayed report of a theft. It was reported that a hammock was stolen from a backyard sometime between May 17 and May 19. The incident occurred in the 1400 block of Cloverdale Avenue, Highland Park.

Police are investigating a delayed report of a theft. It was reported that approximately 100 pieces of miscellaneous jewelry including rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pendants and watches were stolen from a residence sometime between May 12 at 6 p.m. and May 19 at 6 p.m. No forced entry was noted. The incident occurred in the 1400 block of Linden Avenue, Highland Park. 

Police are investigating a report of a theft. It was reported that two male teenagers had stolen two bicycles from the 500 block of Green Bay Road, Highland Park. One bicycle with an attached child trailer was located shortly after the theft and the second bicycle was found leaning up against a tree in the 1200 block of Green Bay Road approximately 1.5 hours later.
