Police Stepping Up Cell Phone Enforcement as School Ends

Driving while talking on a hand-held cell phone is prohibited in Highland Park. Next week, as schools let out for the summer, cops will be on the lookout for violators.

Starting Monday, Highland Park Police will be conducting extra enforcement of the ban against using hand-held phones while driving.

This initiative, scheduled June 3-7, coincides with the last week of school in Highland Park. An additional joint jurisdictional enforcement will occur at the start of school in August, according to the city.

Police in Deerfield, Lake Forest, Winnetka and Waukegan will be conducting similar enforcements.

During a joint multi-jurisdictional education and enforcement initiative conducted April 1-5, participating police departments issued:

  • 293 citations for hand-held cell phone use while driving violations.
  • 219 warnings for hand-held cell phone use while driving violations.
  • 20 citations for state hand-held cell phone use while driving in a school zone violations.
  • 1 warning for state hand-held cell phone use while driving in a school zone violations.
  • 2 citations for state texting and driving violations.
Legislation is pending in Illinois, which, if passed, will establish a state-wide restriction on the use of hand-held cell phone devices while driving.
